Ella Brandon Stanton

Jun 29, 1844 - Oct 6, 1900

Elizabeth "Ella" Elmina Brandon was born in Jun 29, 1844 to parents Gerard Chittocque Brandon and Charlotte Smith Hoggatt and is one of the surviving Brandon children.

She married Aaron Stanton, a farmer, on Oct 12, 1865 in Natchez, Mississippi. Ella and Aaron had four children: Charlotte Brandon Stanton, Anna Winston Stanton, Agnes Stanton, and David Brandon Stanton. In 1880, the ages of Ella's children were Charlotte (13), Anna (12), Agnes (10), and David (7).

The 1880 Census also shows two of Ella's siblings living with her: Mary S. Brandon, single and aged 25, and Charles (aged 15). There are two cousins listed as also living in the Stanton home: Anna E. Winston (aged 33) and Anna E. Stanton (aged 25). There was also a live-in schoolteacher named Kate Logan, aged 35, along with a number of other servants.

Ella and Aaron lived at Brandon Hall with Ella's family and took over the home after the death of her parents.

The 1900 Census shows Ella listed as HoH (at the age of 55), and there is no mention of Aaron. Also residing in the home are daughter Charlotte B. Merrill (aged 33), daughter Agnes Stanton (aged 29), sister Mary B. Kearny (aged 45), grandson Dunbar S. Merrill (aged 11), grandson Aaron S. Dunbar (aged 10), and niece Mayken Pierce (aged 15).

Brandon Hall had apparently been opened as a boarding house. Also listed on the 1900 Census as "Boarders" are:

  • Cebert P. Rose (aged 30 & from Missouri),
  • Natalie Rose (aged 7 & from Mississippi),
  • Audley J. Rose (aged 5 & from Mississippi),
  • Robert E. Rose (no age & from Mississippi),
  • Gilbert H. Cantrell (aged 33 & from Mississippi),
  • Ethel Cantrell (aged 24 & from Mississippi),
  • Walter P. Reese (no age & no location),
  • Julia Reese (aged 39 & no location),
  • Walter P. Reese (no age & no location), and
  • William & Ethel Morgan (no age & no location).

A colored servant, Celia Heywood, is also listed as residing at the home.

The 2 year-old that died in 1894, Elizabeth Merrill, and is also buried in Brandon cemetary belongs to Ella's granddaughter by her eldest daughter, Charlotte - who married Dunbar Merrill.

Ella Brandon Stanton died on Oct 6, 1900 and is buried, along with her husband, Aaron Stanton (d. 1918), in Natchez City Cemetery in Natchez, Mississippi. A memorial is engraved into Aaron's headstone for their son, David Stanton, who died and is buried in Batopilas, Mexico (d. 1894).
