James Chambers Brandon

Dec 2, 1845 - Apr 13, 1909

James Chambers Brandon was born in 1846 to parents Gerard Chittocque Brandon and Charlotte Smith Hoggatt and is one of the surviving Brandon children.

He entered the Confederate service in 1863, at the age of seventeen. He was wounded in battle in Franklin, Tennessee. Though he recovered, James was forced to use crutches for the remainder of his life.

He came home and married Ann Hunt Archer on Jan 10, 1861. The couple had four children: Gerard Philip, James Archer (b. 1871 - d. 1874), Pauline, and Charlotte S. He moved his family to Greenville, Mississippi, where he became the county treasurer. A 1880 Census shows the ages of the family being James (34), Ann (34), Gerard (11), Pauline (6), and Charlotte (1).

In January 1906, he lost his eldest son, Gerard Philip Brandon, and never got over the heartache. He died, disinterested in life, in 1909 at the age of 63. James's son, Gerard, bore the middle name of his late uncle, Philip. His wife, Ann, lived to be 95 and died in 1940.
